Grants & Scholarships
Special Opportunities Fund Guidelines (Established June 2008)
Fund Mission
Alice Melady made generous donations to BCC in the early 1990’s and this fund was established. Her desire was to help members achieve their educational goals and “uplift” people in their vocational pursuits.
Scope of Grants
Grants will be awarded to support higher education, vocational training, programs for career advancement or enhancement, special needs learning, tutoring for success and reimbursement for tools or supplies needed for these endeavors.
Eligibility
Grants will be awarded to active BCC members and their progeny (children, grandchildren etc.). Financial need will be the first, but not the sole criterion.
Administration
Each applicant must submit a simple application form, found in the church office, on the BCC website or provided by a committee member. Anyone may contact a committee member with a referral and the committee will contact the potential applicant with information about the fund and the application process. There will be an application review date twice a year, December 31st and May 31st, however, emergency applications outside of these dates will be considered as needed. Decisions will be communicated to the applicants within 30 days of submission. Strict confidentiality will be maintained throughout the application process and in the permanent fund records.

Examples of grants given in past or encouraged in future
-
Tuition assistance for a person of any age attending community or 4 year college
-
Aid for a child with learning challenges or who needs special tutoring to master a subject or prepare for college
-
Reimbursement for supplies such as a laptop computer or books. Graduating high school seniors may fill out a short form application for supplies needed in the college or vocational programs they will be attending after high school.
-
Private school tuition assistance, especially to maintain enrollment in situations where financial circumstances change unexpectedly
-
Coursework or programs that will enhance an individual’s skills on the job, help them enter a new field or advance to a higher level. Some examples might be a teacher taking summer credits, a nurse looking to specialize in a particular area or a financial services employee seeking accreditation in some area.
The committee will establish an annual operating budget to support these efforts that is consistent with the Trustees overall management recommendations for all church funds. We have a budget of about $10,000 in 2008. We will remind the congregation of this resource from time to time to make sure that it is utilized by the people who need it most.
